Orsayor: Tamika, My question to you is.... How do you feel about book covers that are sexually explicit? I know SEX sells but how much is too much?
Tamika: Having a sexy cover is ideal especially if it is erotica or a romance based novel. But of course there can be a fine line between sexy and raunchy. I often wish people would be original when it comes to cover concepts. There is plenty to do and many colors to choose from. So ask yourself does a cover need a big butt and breast? Does it need a muscular guy without a shirt on? Yawn!
Been there, done that. Can we please step it up a little? Books are judge by their cover so a reader does not see the content of the book beforehand all they will see is a big butt and a smile and you know what BBD said in their song “Poison”? I wouldn’t trust a book with a big butt in a smile to be a great read so why think that is the angle you must take to sell a book.
Let’s take it back to when most of our African-American literature made sense. When it had true meaning and when we wrote about stories our people could relate to. I am tired of our books not being stocked on the shelves because of these so-called sexy covers. Let’s try to do something more respectable for a change.
